Get Rid of That Old Kitchen Look Kitchens Remodeling

Article by Richard Dinae

First things first: before you decide on which kitchens remodeling contractor you should hire, here is a checklist that you should go through. One: do you want a complete overhaul, or would you prefer to keep certain parts and aspects of your kitchen right now? For example: do you want that kitchen island to remain where it is or would you rather it moved to someplace else. Do you wish to retain the overhead kitchen cabinets, but renovate everything else? Do you want new floors as well? These are the sort of questions to ask when you are deciding on overhauling everything or almost everything.

Two: do you want your plumbing and electrical outlets moved as well?

Three: how many weeks (or months) are you allotting yourself for this home improvement / kitchens remodeling project?

Lastly: what is your expenditure ceiling? Exactly how much are you willing to spend for your kitchens remodeling project?

Once you have answered those questions, it would be fairly easy to limit yourself to the scope of your project. Limiting yourself is important here, since kitchen remodeling can be both a lengthy and expensive affair. However, it can work to your advantage if you do your research right, put in the necessary hours of work and hire the right kind of contractor. So how do you know which contractor to hire?

There are 2 kinds of contractor. The general contractor is likely to coordinate the entire kitchens remodeling project. That means he or she can hire anyone from interior designer to carpenters, to floor installers, to electricians, to plumbers, even professional artists to install that tile mosaic for your kitchen wall, if you want one. A general contractor pretty much handles the paperwork for you (from building permits to subscribing to building codes.) He or she can also give you a warranty for the work done. Needless to say, a general contractor comes with a steep price.

In case you decide to go whole hog and hire a general contractor, your best bet would always be the one who already has the experience and years behind the profession. You can ask friends and family members for referrals. If you can visit a physical site where the contractor is currently working or a finished project you can see, then so much the better. Remember, general contractors usually offer warranties in case you want something in your kitchen redone; so yes, try to see what provisions he or she would have in the contract about warranties. Most general contractors can work within a specific time frame. So if you have less than a month to go on with this home improvement project then make sure that the contractor will agree to get the work done by then.

On the other hand, if you decide to get most of the work done by yourself, but your would need more specialized contractors for plumbing, or electrical transfers, or carpentry, or glass installation, etc. your best bet would still lie on people with the most experience. Again, you can ask for referral from people you know. In this case, however, it is your job to make sure that they follow your specifications accordingly. If you can find specialized contractors who are willing to provide warranties for their jobs, then it might be worthwhile to hire them. There are a fair number of specialized contractors who have worked extensively in kitchen renovation projects. You can learn more about this particular background by simply asking them about their previous work.

Home Improving Kitchens

Article by Tony Robinson

Tired of that same look in your kitchen and now ready to make some changes but do not know where to start? Maybe you know where to start but feel that it takes thousands of dollars to make changes in a home? Wrong!

At what time you consider improving your home you will need to set up a budget. Sure, it will cost you money, but it will not cost you thousands of dollars to remodel a kitchen unless you hire professionals. Most home improvement materials come with systematic instructions that will guide you through the process of improving your home.

The down side is most instruction guides I have ever seen are foreign in nature, since many guide builders think on their own level and most times not good with English. For example, I edited and typed in a Dovetail Fixture guide, which were about 52 pages in length. At what time I read the guide I thought to myself, these people are going to have difficulty putting this thing together. I had never heard of a Dovetail Fixture, but felt I was more competent to put it together without the manuscript instructions. When I finished the guide in 8 hours, it took one hour to put the thing together. Before the guide was finished the service people tried for two weeks to get that critter up and running, thus the point is instructions can be difficult.

Still, if the instructions for home improving are difficult read the steps over until you finally see where the instructions are heading. If you have problems with some of the technical words look them up in the dictionary to grasp a meaning and place it with the step.

Before starting the improvement steps layout a plan to determine what you want to do with your kitchen. The kitchen has multiple areas, including dining area, cooking area, and so forth. Depends on the size of your kitchen but few kitchens measure at angles, distance, length and width, thus determine the size of the kitchen is important for home improvement.

When considering home improving your kitchen and after laying out your plans, do not forget spacing. Most counter areas require spacing for sitting, thus about two foot should be tossed in the layout of your home improvement plan.

Well now, you have the plans laid out and ready to install your new cabinets. If you are wondering where to start with the cabinets consider home depots where they offer ready to install systems. The cabinets today come with ready-made blueprints that help you see which direction your kitchen is going, as well as well drawn out computerized instructions including graphs and charts to get you up and running to the finish line.

If you plan to laminate your countertops you will need a few tools out of the ordinary, but for the most part, you will have all the tools you need before you start your project. The tools for laminating countertops include compass, masking tape, jigsaw, silicone, strips, predrilled holes, wrench, miter bolts and so forth. Do not let the technicality of the terms confuse you.

If you have difficulty understand what you need, write down any information given to you to get you on your way to improving your home. If you feel threatened by laminate countertops, you may want to revert to tiling the tops. You will need matching caulk, ‘polished-granite sealer,” MDF base, or plywood, fiberglass joint tape, tile backer, saw and so forth.

If you want to get fancy, you could tile your walls, especially in particular areas of the kitchen. For example, you could add fancy tile behind the stove area to setoff a new paint job, or else tile the entire kitchen. Adding tile behind the stove area, especially if you have hardwood areas in the kitchen will give off a country-fried appeal. Otherwise, you could go for another grander appeal with the use of tile. Tile is wonderful, since it allows more room for creativity.

Twenty years ago there probably wasn’t much on your deck or patio except a charcoal barbecue and a picnic table. How times have changed! Now home improvement professionals are creating “outdoor rooms” for their clients and the most popular kind is the outdoor kitchen. Outdoor kitchens vary considerably from their indoor counterparts. Since they don’t get as much use, they often don’t require a lot of cabinet space and may not need a fridge or sink.

Grills: The heart of your outdoor kitchen is a gas grill. This can be a simple affair or it can be an elaborate model capable of grilling mountains of food. Many models come with a grilling area and side burners that you can use to cook side dishes and sauces. Give some thought to where you want to place the grill. It should be in a location where smoke won’t blow on the diners and that allows the cook to remain part of the action.

Counters and Sinks: Allow plenty of counter space on either side of the grill. Use a durable, low-maintenance material such as concrete or slate. In terms of sinks, skip the fancy porcelain or copper sinks you might use inside; stainless steel is the way to go. If the sink is part of a wet bar, position it accordingly. Keep in mind that you probably only need cold water unless you want to wash dishes outside.

Cabinets: If you’re planning to use your outdoor kitchen a lot, it is more convenient to store utensils, dishes, and pots outside. One option is cabinets set in brick or masonry block. You can also find moderately priced cabinets designed specifically to withstand the weather.

Other Considerations: Remember that you will need to bring electricity, water, and gas from inside the house, so figure that into your home improvement budget. If you’re planning to use the kitchen when the weather gets cold, consider purchasing a portable restaurant-style propane heater. Another option is to add a fire pit or fire table near the eating area.
